Indeed, the ship often is at the top of the list when you sort cruises by lowest price on Norwegian's website. For starters, Norwegian Encore is home to some of the most thrilling waterslides at sea, as well as a kiddie splash zone that will have your little ones squealing with delight. But those are just the appetizers when it comes to family fun on the top deck of the ship. On their top decks, the ships have pools (one on Sun, two on Sky), whirlpools, a basketball court that doubles as a volleyball court, golf driving nets and a jogging track.

When it comes to the largest cruise ships, Royal Caribbean takes the crown. Their Oasis-class ships are currently the biggest on the planet, with all five of the largest cruise ships in the world being part of that group. In fact, Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest class of ships, the Prima Class, will not be close in terms of size to the largest ships NCL currently has. Newer cruise ships often have better amenities, updated decor, and more activities. NCL’s newest Prima-class vessels offer a three-story go-kart track, Broadway-style shows, a 10-story dry slide, mini golf, water slides, and more.

While not quite as big as the biggest ships from rival lines Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Encore is still firmly in the pantheon of the world's cruising giants. The company will also add a new multi-ship pier at its private Bahamas island, Great Stirrup Cay, scheduled for completion by late 2025. The pier will be able to accommodate two large ships at once. The upscale Oceania Cruises will take delivery of two 1,450-guest ships in 2027 and 2029, and luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises will add two ships in 2026 and 2029, each accommodating 850 passengers. Having sailed in one of Norwegian Epic's cabins for one, I can confidently declare them among the coolest solo digs at sea. I particularly love the "Jetsons" futuristic-style design and the multicolored mood lighting.

At full capacity, the Norwegian Encore holds 6,038 passengers. That includes 3,998 cruise vacationers and 1,735 staff members. The NCL Star was built in 2001 and has a total weight of 91,740 gross tons. It spans 965 feet (294 meters) in length and is the 12th largest among Norwegian Cruise Line’s 19 active cruise ships.

The current newest ship is Norwegian Prima, which first started sailing in 2022. But the largest ship in the fleet is Norwegian Encore, which debuted in 2019. This deck features the Sun Deck, an area with extra lounge chairs for guests to enjoy. Deck 20 is also where the tops of the impressive waterslides are located, including the Aqua Racer and Free Fall slides. There are 18 ships in the NCL fleet, with another due next year.

In this case, Discovery Princess comes in at 145,000 gross tons, which is actually a tie with sister-ship Enchanted Princess. At double occupancy, the ship carries 3,660 passengers, although that figure would rise when three or more are put in a cabin. NCL’s largest guest capacity ship offers many fun and entertaining activities for passengers to enjoy onboard. The ship has some Norwegian Cruise Line classics, as well as unique areas for guests to explore. The Norwegian Escape is one of four ships in the NCL Breakaway Plus Class of ship.

This over 1,100 feet long race track allows guests to put the pedal-to-the-medal as they race around one of the longest race tracks at sea. Norwegian Cruise Line is currently the only cruise line in the world that offers a race track with real cars at sea. To participate in this speedy activity, it is an additional cost, $15 for adults and $15 for children.

This ship comes in at 78,903 gross registered tons and can carry 1,936 guests. Norwegian Pearl was built one year before Norwegian Gem and comes in at 93,530 gross register tonnage. The vessel can accommodate 2.394 guests and began its career in 2006. She'll begin sailing out of Jacksonville, FL in November 2025 alongside Carnival Elation. She, too, measures 142,500 gross registered tons and has the ability to carry 3,099 guests at double occupancy. Norwegian Joy measures 167,725 gross registered tonnages, can hold 3,804 guests, and was delivered to the fleet in 2017.

It has a distinctly different vibe than most ships its size, in part due to its massive upper deck observation lounge, where passengers can indulge in hours of quiet relaxation. Beyond the ship's more sophisticated, mellow spaces, it also features go-karts, water slides and lots of other activities for kids and adults alike to explore. The biggest of four vessels in Norwegian's Breakaway Plus class of ships, Norwegian Encore is the Norwegian ship most packed with restaurants, bars, entertainment and over-the-top attractions. There's also plenty of room to spare for multiple pools, waterslides and a kiddie splash zone. One of two ships in the line's Sun class that date to the turn of the millennium, Norwegian Sky is far from the snazziest ship in the Norwegian fleet. At 77,104 tons and carrying 1,944 passengers, it's just half the size of Norwegian's biggest ships and has far fewer venues, from bars and restaurants to entertainment spaces.

Each class of ship has a unique architectural design layout and features. Most ships in a particular class have an almost identical layout with some minor changes. Norwegian Cruise Line currently has four new cruise ships on order, and all were originally designed to be smaller than the biggest Norwegian ships currently at sea. However, Norwegian recently announced that some of the ships will be redesigned to be as much as 20% bigger.

She is 78,309 GRTs and carries 1,936 passengers (based on two per cabin). Norwegian Star is the first ship in the Dawn Class and is the sister of Norwegian Dawn. She is 91,740 GRTs and carries 2,348 passengers (based on two per cabin). The ship was originally ordered by and intended for Star Cruises, and it was originally named SuperStar Libra before being transferred to Star’s then subsidiary, Norwegian Cruise Line. Norwegian Dawn is the second ship in the Dawn Class and is the sister of Norwegian Star.

The Norwegian Joy is a vibrant and exciting ship that caters to guests of all ages. With a length of approximately 1,094 feet and a passenger capacity of over 3,800, this ship offers a wide range of activities and entertainment choices. From exhilarating go-kart racetracks to peaceful spa retreats, the Norwegian Joy has something for everyone. While the ship is one of NCL's newest, she isn't one of their largest. In total, Norwegian Prima comes in at just 142,500 gross registered tons and can hold 3,215 guests, which is a far cry from some of Royal Caribbean's newest builds, including Icon of the Seas. At 169,116 gross registered tons, Norwegian Encore is the largest ship in NCL's fleet.
